Elpitiya PS poll : 62% voter turnout recorded

Voting for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha Election is continuing in a peaceful manner with a 62% voter turnout as of noon recorded.

53,384 persons are eligible to cast their ballot at 47 polling centres.

Galle District Returning Officer Somaratne Vidanapathirana said five parties are contesting the Elpitiya Election, with the election being conducted to elect 28 Pradeshiya Sabha members.

155 candidates from five main political parties are contesting for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha Election.

Vidanapathirana said voting will conclude at 4pm while the counting of votes will be completed at the polling centres after 4pm.

He stated the Elpitiya Technical College has been prepped as the main election centre.

Vidanapathirana commenting on the issuance of results said the votes of the relevant polling centres will be announced first while secondly, the vote of the 17 divisions will be announced and thirdly the final results of Pradeshiya Sabha Election will be released.

Election monitoring body the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence says voting for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha Election is underway in a peaceful manner.

Elpitiya PS Election voting begins…

Voting for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) election got underway at 7 am and will go on until 4 pm today (Oct 11), an official at the Galle District Election office said.

The National Election Commission (NEC) said that 53,384 eligible voters are expected to cast their votes at 47 polling centres located across 17 electoral districts.

Five recognised political parties will field 155 candidates seeking to occupy the 28 seats in the Pradeshiya Sabha.

The Elpitiya PS poll was scheduled to be held in 2017, but had been suspended on a court order, after the Democratic National United Front petitioned against the NEC’s decision to reject its nomination list.
