Ten Sailors and two officers have been remanded until September 16 for opening fire and assaulting four fishermen who had ignored stop signals in the seas off Kuchchaveli in Trincomalee last month.
Navy officers who were on night patrol had signaled a suspicious fishing boat to stop on August 28, and had fired gun shots after the boat had fled the area.
The four fishermen had been arrested the next day with injuries. They had been hospitalized after being handed over to the Marine Police. Statements had also been recorded from the 10 navy officers involved in the incident.
Upon an examination carried out by the Trincomalee Magistrate at the hospital, the fishermen had said that they sustained injuries after being allegedly assaulted by the navy officers.
Accordingly, the Magistrate ordered that the fishermen be released on surety bails.
