President Maithripala Sirisena says no faction should attempt to overturn the decision to reinstate the capital punishment.
Speaking during an event in Polonnaruwa President said he contacted the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres last evening and clarified his stance on which the decision to reinstate the death penalty was reached.
The Head of State noted he signed the proposal to implement the death penalty against drug racketeers not due to hatred, but with the aim of protecting the country’s future.
President Maithripala Sirisena claimed various crimes reported within the country were a result of the drug menace.
The President stressed the drug menace cannot be eradicated without enforcing the death penalty as it has spread across the country with youth the main victims.
