Cabinet approves legal action against culprits spreading fake news

The Cabinet has given its nod to amend the Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure, to take legal action against people who create and spread fake news.

The relevant Cabinet paper had been submitted by Minister of Public Administration Ranjith Maddumabandara, who is also Acting Minister of Justice and Prison Reforms, following a request of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Security.

Accordingly, persons who are found guilty of creating and spreading fake news, which poses a threat to national security, ethnic harmony and co-existence would be fined maximum of one million rupees or could be jailed for a maximum of five years or both.
