CID to probe Kurunegala doctor Mohamed Shafi and wife’s assets acquired over the last 15 years

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is planning to launch a probe into the assets acquired by Kurunegala Hospital doctor Mohamed Shafi and his wife during the last 15 years.

Investigations have revealed that both the doctor and his wife have been practicing as medical doctors for some 15 years.

Accordingly, the assets and revenue earned by Dr. Shafi and his wife by means of investments and selling property during this time period would be investigated by the CID .

It is believed that charges will be filed under the Money Laundering Act if any suspicious transactions concerning the assets are uncovered during the probe.

“The CID has powers to file charges against suspects under the Money Laundering Act,” Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said.

Dr. Shafi who is attached to the Kurunegala Hospital’s gynaecology and obstetrics section was arrested last week over allegations that he had acquired a large number of assets through suspicious means.

Allegations have also been levelled against the doctor that he had sterilised 4000 women while performing C-section procedures.
